Artist Biography
Annie Kennerley works from her home studio in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
In the last two years Annie has enjoyed creating a whole new and very different body of work based on a journey through a series of dreams. Some of the drama and atmosphere from her previous work appears here too. Viewers are invited to wander along disappearing pathways, to make decisions about direction and time, to choose a door to go through. She invites the viewer to bring their own interpretation and experience the intentionally ambiguous choices.
Multiple layers, texture and glazes deepen the experience.
Annie uses mixed media with acrylic paints and inks to create pieces on canvas and wood panel.
Capturing changing skies, clouds and ever changing light Annie has always been inspired by the spectacular seascapes of the North East coastline.
She also spends time each year emerged in in the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava. Both are very different and allow her passion for colour and atmosphere to evolve. Semi-abstracted images are recorded in sketchbooks as starting points to be developed into richly textured paintings in the studio later.
Boldly intuitive her most recent abstract work has been inspired by shorelines whilst looking for connections within in the shapes, colours, and movement.
Originally studying art, design, drawing and photography for two years within a three year professional teaching course, Annie went on to teach primary age children for 33 years using her art as much as possible within her career. She designed and painted sets for the school plays with the pupils and together with storytelling, developed some wonderful memories for all.
Now finished teaching, she has been able to concentrate on developing her own art practice.
Annie’s work is exhibited in Newcastle and Northumberland and is in private collections in France and Spain.
